Towns and Countryside of Cyprus in Travellers Accounts
The urban environment, the villages, and the state of the countryside in general are usually described in travel literature, even though they are not very often systematically examined, because they were not always the main area of interest of the travellers. This is precisely the case with Cyprus. The many, relevant descriptions in the travel books do not simply paint a static picture of the urban landscape and the island's countryside, but they allow us to follow the changes these underwent over centuries. Hence, from the available information, to the extent that this is possible, a reconstruction will be attempted of what the towns, the ports, the villages and the countryside looked like, in combination with other directly connected factors, such as population, roads, technology, crops cultivated, etc.
