Three English Maps of Cyprus – Morden, Jefferys and Drummond

Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to explore the earliest English cartographic representations of Cyprus - those produced by Robert Morden in 1687, by Thomas Jefferys for Richard Pococke's A Description of the East in 1745, and by Alexander Drummond for his Travels through Different Cities of Germany, Italy, Greece ... in 1754. The paper will include a look at the mapmakers themselves, the context of the making of these maps and of the map trade of their time, and a wider consideration of the English perception of Cyprus in the mid eighteenth century.
