Description

This edition is very uncommon in its entirety. It was produced in livraisons of 5 plates each. Stackelberg’s plates first appeared as engravings, published at Rome in 1825, with captions in French. These costume plates attracted a great deal of attention, and they were immediately taken up by other publishers in England, France and Italy. The French edition was produced with the plates lithographed by Levilly and printed mostly at Mlle. Formentin’s lithographic press. The title-page looks like an engraving, but the imprint indicates that it is a lithograph printed by Senefelder.
