The Sylvia Ioannou Foundation announces a series of International Conferences, to be held biennially, under the general title:

The Greek World in Travel Accounts and Maps

The inaugural Conference was held in Athens, on 18th-20th October 2012, at the Museum of Cycladic Art. To reflect the focus of the Foundation's collection of books and maps on Cyprus, as well as the occasion of Cyprus assuming the E.U. Presidency in July 1012, the theme was:
Cyprus on the crossroads of travellers and map-makers
from the 15th to 20th century
The Conference thematic sections were:
   • The Images of Cyprus in Early Modern Times: Threads of Tradition
   • Changing Images and Points of Correspondence: Ottoman Domination and Western Penetration
   • Contrasts and Challenges: Empire, Colonialism and Nation
   • Cartographical and Travellers' Collections in the Digital Age
The Conference was held in collaboration with the University of the Aegean and the History and Archaeology Department of the University of Cyprus.
