Reconstructing Orality: Travellers and Networks in Cyprus in the 18th Century

In contrast to written sources, the oral sources of travel literature have been a long neglected field of research. Neither their considerable practical role in the process of travelling nor their impact on the perpective and content of travelogues have been analyzed yet. The paper makes an attempt to reconstruct the oral subtexts of 18th century travelogues on Cyprus by pointing out the networks which guarded the
travellers and and guided their attention. The paper aims to highlight the important mediating role of oral communication in respect to both the perception and the reproduction of a foreign reality.
